Doctoral student Lan Jin received funding for her research from the Yale Institute for Biospheric Studies (YIBS). Lan’s work investigates air pollution distribution with high spatial resolution in three dimensions, which will potentially improve the accuracy of exposure estimates to air pollution for people living in high-floor apartments in mega-cities. She also investigates methods to optimize sample size and locations to conduct effective sampling campaigns with minimized costs, which can provide a framework for similar cities or situations with limited funding and research resources. This work will be the first study characterizing air pollution at street- or community-level in China. The results will potentially allow the general public and policy makers to make more informed decisions to control pollution and reduce exposure.
